What is Augmentin?

Augmentin is a combination drug, an antibiotic from the penicillin group – amoxicillin and an inhibitor of beta-lactamase (enzymes of microbial cells) – clavulanic acid.

Augmentin it is used to treat diseases caused by pathogens, is active against infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, infections of the ENT organs, infections of the urinary tract, and infections of the skin and soft tissues.

Augmentin is a beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin series. This combination reduces antibiotic resistance (microbial resistance to antibiotics). Directly clavulanic acid or potassium clavulanate act on the beta-lactamase of the microbial cell, thereby making pathogenic microorganisms sensitive to amoxicillin.

What you need to know before you start taking Augmentin

You should not use drug if you are allergic to it or if you have a history of an allergic reaction to a group of antibiotics called cephalosporins. Since penicillins quite often cause an allergic reaction up to the appearance of anaphylactic shock (complicated immediate high sensitivity to an allergen). Penillins and cephalosporins have a similar chemical structure and therefore the latter are expected to cause allergies as well.

It is also worth refusing to take Augmentin and choose an alternative treatment if you have such conditions and contraindications as:

severe kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
problems with the functioning of the liver (or if there was a history of jaundice);
mononucleosis (viral infection characterized by damage to the lymphatic organs);

Augmentin may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives – this is worth considering if you are undergoing treatment with Augmentin and taking contraceptives and you are not planning a pregnancy.

How to take Augmentin?

Augmentin works best when taken right before meals.

Augmentin must be taken every 12 hours. That is, one dose per day is enough (for example, every morning).

Augmentin tablets must be taken orally, as a whole, with a sufficient amount of water.

Before using drug in the form of an oral suspension, shake the vial thoroughly. When measuring the dose, it is necessary to use only the measuring utensils that come with this dosage form. Do not use ordinary tableware, as deviations in dosage accuracy may occur.

Prepare the suspension during dosing as follows:

knock on the bottle until all the powder flows freely;
add about ⅔ of its total amount of water and shake vigorously to suspend (mix until smooth) the powder;
add the rest of the water and shake the bottle again;
after which the suspension is ready for use.
Use this medicine for the entire prescribed period of time, even if your symptoms improve quickly.

Augmentin, which is an antibiotic, is absolutely not effective for treating viral infections, so it is completely irrational to use it for influenza or SARS. Its use takes place only if the viral disease is complicated and a bacterial infection (for example, pneumonia) is connected. But be sure to remember that such an appointment should be set by a doctor.

Store Augmentin tablets at normal room temperature, in a dry place.

It is necessary to store the Augmentin suspension in the refrigerator, it cannot be frozen, the maximum allowable low value is 2 ° C. The opened vial from the moment of its opening should be stored no longer than 10 days.
